Animal welfare

At Animal Wise, we are committed to helping transform the tourism sector into a space where animal welfare is not just an objective, but an ongoing and fundamental part of responsible tourism practices.

Tourism activities involving animals can affect their welfare and, in certain circumstances, their habitats. That is why we develop criteria, training and assessment tools that help professionals and businesses identify potential impacts, improve their practices and make evidence-based decisions.

Our goal is to bring scientific knowledge closer to the realities of the tourism sector and facilitate improvement processes that take into account the needs of animals, the characteristics of each activity and its specific context.

“El turismo responsable no solo es una tendencia, es una necesidad para el futuro del sector”

Responsible tourism with animals:
A pillar of Sustainability

What is Sustainable Tourism with Animals?

Sustainable tourism involving animals seeks to ensure that tourism activities involving animals take into account their needs, welfare and the potential effects of the activity on them and their environment.

This involves considering how each activity is carried out, the type of interaction with the animals and its potential effects, in order to identify risks and implement measures to prevent, minimise or manage potential impacts.

These activities can take many different forms, from wildlife watching and other nature-based experiences to visits to rescue centres, sanctuaries or activities involving domestic animals. Each context has its own characteristics, risks and needs, and therefore there is no single approach that can be applied to every activity.

Sustainability in this context also means considering the environment in which the activity takes place, including ecosystems, resources used and potential effects on species and their habitats. The aim is to support practices that allow these activities to be carried out responsibly, taking into account both the needs of animals and the environmental and social characteristics of each destination.

At Animal Wise, we help facilitate this process through training, evidence-based criteria, assessment tools and consultancy for tourism professionals and businesses. Our approach aims to turn knowledge about animal welfare and sustainability into practical tools for decision-making and continuous improvement.

How responsible tourism involving animals can make a difference

Biodiversity conservation

By choosing activities that respect wildlife, you directly contribute to the conservation of species and their natural habitats. This is vital to maintaining biodiversity, essential for the ecological health of the planet.

Education and awareness

Responsible animal tourism offers a unique platform to educate tourists about the importance of respecting wildlife and ecosystems. This education is key to fostering broader environmental awareness and promoting sustainable practices among visitors.

Support for local communities

Promotion of ethical practices

Many of our activities are carried out in collaboration with local communities, providing not only employment, but also a source of income that favors conservation projects led by these communities.

Through the certification and training of tourism companies, we ensure that ethical practices are the norm and not the exception in the tourism industry. This includes the promotion of activities that do not exploit animals and that promote their well-being and conservation.
